Long ago, deep in the Blue Ridge mountains, lived a warm-hearted wizard named Nizer (n-eye-zer) Thornwick, a man known far and wide for his loyalty, kindness, and his uncanny ability to bring people together.
Where many others built towers for solitude or secrecy, Nizer dreamed of something different:
A home where all magical folk could gather in peace.
A place where rivalries faded, friendships formed, and the world, if only for a moment, felt safe.
To fulfill that dream, he built what would become known as The Wizard Hideout.
Nizer believed the magical world was losing its sense of unity.
He saw too many walls, too many divisions, and not enough fellowship.
So he created a sanctuary:
It was more than a house. It was a refuge of belonging.
Anyone who crossed its threshold felt an immediate stillness - a gentle magic that whispered, “You’re home.”
Those who knew Nizer remembered his gatherings as the stuff of legend. The Hideout echoed with:
The portraits that now hang upon the walls once held memories of the many friends Nizer welcomed — ambassadors, herbalists, jesters, scholars, and adventurers of every kind. Each frame is an echo of a life touched by Thornwick’s kindness.
Behind a disguised door lies a room that reveals itself when needed. Thornwick was a master of subtle, complex enchantments, and his greatest creation was a pocket dimension he wove into the fabric of the Hideout itself.
Known as The Wand & Lantern, the tavern existed in a thin layer of reality beside the home, appearing only when Nizer wished it, and only for those he trusted.
It couldn’t be found unless:
Most wizards walked these halls for years and never saw the tavern even once.
It revealed itself for fellowship, laughter, private talks, and magical gatherings that needed a space untouched by the outside world.
As his gatherings grew, so did his influence. Witches and wizards from every walk of life found refuge at the Hideout - Aurors, scholars, outcasts, and even those the Ministry preferred to keep under watch.
What began as harmless hospitality soon drew suspicion.
Some within the Ministry believed Nizer’s ability to unite people across houses, bloodlines, and allegiances made him dangerous.
Others accused him of harboring fugitives, though no evidence was ever produced. Whispers spread. Files were opened. A quiet investigation turned into an active pursuit.
And suddenly, he vanished.
When the Ministry eventually stormed the Hideout, the home was empty, except for a single portrait on the wall that had never been there before.
On the wall of the Hideout hangs Nizer’s enchanted portrait. And, to this day, he still moves, watches, and reacts - a silent guardian who warmly greets those who enter his home.
Many guests describe the portrait as:
After Nizer’s disappearance, the Hideout’s powerful concealment charms continued to protect it.
But over time:
And then one day, it was found.
As the balance of magic shifted in the modern age, Thornwick’s ancient spells softened just enough for the Hideout to be found again.
Recognizing a keeper worthy of continuing its purpose, the home revealed itself and allowed for its restoration.
Every stone, every candle, every magical artifact has been carefully returned to its original glory, so the Hideout could once again welcome guests from far and wide.
Nizer Thornwick created this home for:
By opening the Hideout today, the tradition continues. Guests don’t just stay here, they participate in a centuries-old legacy of friendship, warmth, and belonging.
Though Nizer no longer walks these halls, his spirit of hospitality lingers in every corner of the Hideout.
Those who stay within these walls often leave with the same feeling:
“I felt like I walked into to another world.
It seems like an altered reality.”
Perhaps it's your turn?
We look forward to welcoming you to The Wizard Hideout.
